Title sequence first draft

This the first draft of the title sequence for Local Lunch News. All of the shots included within this sequence was captured by the group I worked with. Before hand we created a story board allowed us to clearly layout what we wanted our title sequence to look like .

In this photo I can be seen looking for inspiration for what the group wanted the title sequence to look like. I researched existing news programmes and what they typically resemble.

In this image I can be seen making suggestions to Julia and what to add. The process of creating the title sequence consisted of us taking turns in controlling the mouse.

In this image I can be seen editing the sound for our news programme. I added an equaliser to my the sound and also added a sound compressor in order to make quality of the audio better.

Title Sequence First Draft Preview

Preview and feedback session: Title sequence

The feedback session allowed us to pick out specific details that which we could improve in order to make our title sequence better more fitted to the news programme genre. From our feedback, we discovered that our music choice for the title sequence was efficient in following the typical sound of a television news programme.

Main Task: News Programme

TV News Content Planning Sheet

We started off by bringing ideas together on what we wanted to include in our news programme. We came up with ideas for a hard and soft news story. We wanted our hard news story to have a serious theme involving a story that they could possibly relate to. We chose to do a hard news story about cyber bullying as this is a common issue young people struggle with in the present day.

We wanted to also include content the target audience would enjoy such as music and entertainment. We decided to make our soft news story based on the Brit awards which links to the news programme's location identity of the United Kingdom.

Script Ideas
As a group we began brainstorming and coming up with ideas of what we wanted our television news story to sound like in terms of tone and content. Our target audience is for young people of the ages of 11-17 years old and so we wanted for our tone to appear more friendly and welcoming so that it will engage our target audience.

Script Practice
Practising our final scripts allowed us to prepare for a professional studio environment and allowed us to become more comfortable with our roles and the scenario. We had to maintain a serious and formal manner throughout the practice which at times we struggled with as we made mistakes. However the script practises as a whole was ultimately beneficial as it allowed us to ensure that we prepare and organise for the real filming accordingly.

Risk Assessment
From our risk assessment, we were able to foresee and detect any potential risks that could occur during the filming process and how high the risk was. It also allowed us to pick out the key things we would have to take extra care with in order to maintain a state of safety for us. We picked out key aspects of the drama studio such as the lighting, wires, the cameras and props.

Photos of Filming Day Analysis

From the photos taken on the filming day, it is easy to notice that we were filming a television news programme based on the mise en scene that can be clearly observed by the audience. Both anchors or presenters are dressed in formal attire. As a group we decided that our typical sixth form wear was appropriate for our programme as despite out younger ages in comparison to the typical presenter, we wanted to continue a slightly formal tone. We made sure that we kept a straight posture and confident yet formal body language in order to further establish the expected tone of the news genre.

Our set is quite different to the typical set of a news programme. Due to our target audience being of a younger age, we wanted to ensure that our news had a more friendlier and welcoming tone in order to engage them further. Those of a younger age tend to lose interest in things much quicker and so to engage our target audience, we made sure our set was colourful rather than bland. We used props such as sofas and cubes in order to create a sense of familiarity for the target audience, ultimately making them feel as though they are in the room with us and engaging in a friendly conversation. We wanted to cater for a younger audience as this audience has low representation in the television news genre. We also wanted to make the news more engaging and interesting for the audience so that they will fully consume the information the news or media provide to them. The way we spoke also played a significant role in how we wanted our target audience to receive it. To be specific, we made sure we did not use words that would be too complex for our target audience to understand it properly and so we ensured we used sophisticated but simple words that which our audience could understand.

Radio Adverts Analysis - Theory

BBC Radio One was founded in 1927. It is one of the most successful and most popular radio distributors in the United Kingdom and specialises in broadcasting a range of stations with a variety of genres and content that are specific to their desired target audience. BBC Radio Two holds the spot as the most popular radio station in the UK with having 15.1 million listeners per week. BBC Radio 4 has 11.2 listeners per week. BBC Radio has over 9.9 million listeners per week. The top radio producer institute is the BBC which has several radio stations and 31.2 million listeners every week. A typical radio advert can range from 15 to 60 seconds long however the average running time is approximately 30 seconds long. They typically feature the main parts of the programme such as the hard news story followed by a soft news story in order to create a balance between the content.

The trailer above shows a good representation of what BBC News stands for and aims to provide to its target audience. The trailer begins with a establishing shots taken throughout the country. This is done to provide a representation of a variety of locations the BBC covers whether that be a beach or a skate park. It then goes on to show different types of issues within certain areas including: road blockages, shutting down schools, vandalism, graffiti. These would be considered as the hard news stories as linking back to the idea of news values, these stories are negative and so tend to be more relevant in being a headline or hard news story. This is because stories that are negative tend to be more successful in attracting the target audience. However like many news programmes, they counter the harsh effects of the hard news stories with soft news stories. Soft news stories tend to be more positive and light in nature ultimately providing a safety blanket or form of reassurance for the target audience as having the news full of negative stories would have a very harsh affect on society as whole. This is because the media plays a large role in effecting society through the type of content they present and broadcast. The trailer/advert as a whole is the perfect representation of life itself as it portrays the typical unexpectedness of what one experiences or could experience throughout their life time.

In terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The BBC advert helps to fulfil the needs one has. This diagram demonstrates what Maslow's hierarchy of needs consists of.

Maslow places each of the typical human needs in to specific categories in order for us to identify them clearly. He states that these needs are what are necessary to one's life and they go through out their life trying to fulfil these needs. His ideas play a large role within the media and is a big influence on media products. The hierarchy is important as it can contribute to the success of a media product.

In reference to the BBC News advert, it can be linked to the ideas of Maslow and how media products use these types of audience theories in order to benefit the success of the product itself by fulfilling the needs of its target audience. The advert features multiple shots of locations with issues but also locations that are popular. The advert provides safety needs as it gives a sort of surveillance, a need to know the ongoing events in the world. The advert does this by representing each and every type of location. This could also potentially fulfil the 'love and belonging' section of Maslow's hierarchy of needs as the advert shows a representation of several locations in the United Kingdom, thus providing a sense of belonging as the audience can witness their location being represented.
